The Laulima Giving Program is a non-profit organization that has been assisting families in Hawaii for 19 years. This program helps struggling families, elderly, and other individuals going through various situations through donations of goods and other things. The word “Laulima” means many hands working together and that’s exactly what this program does. Every year, their goal is to bring together communities, businesses, schools, churches, and various agencies to “laulima” to help those in need; not only during the Christmas season but all year round. It was a Saturday filled with giving in the state of Hawaii as the Laulima Giving Program set up their gift drop-off extravaganzas at the most popular malls. These malls included Pearlridge and Windward Mall on Oahu, Queen Ka’ahumanu Center on Maui, and Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. People were able to make their donations of new, unwrapped gifts at these locations from 10am to 4pm.
During the events, there were appearances from members of the KHON2 ohana, various music anddance performers, as well as radio and TV personality, too. Just to name a few, Marisa Yamane emceed the drive at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, Jordan Segundo and Justin Cruz kept donations coming in at Windward Mall, and Trini Kaopuiki emceed at Ala Moana Center along with Imua doing a performance.
The Laulima Giving Program is just one of the many organizations that continue to encourage people
to help others in need. If we have the ability and resources to help someone out, why not? Especially during this season, to think that a child may not have a gift to open on Christmas Day is just heart-breaking.
I hope that everyone gets the opportunity to experience the gift of giving and hopefully it carries on even when the holiday season is over. As the saying goes, it’s better to give than to receive.
