The 35th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival has come to an end. Even though it was 10 days, I feel like it went by way too fast. This was actually my first time attending HIFF and it will definitely not be my last. The films I went to go see were Dear Thalia, the student showcase, and Miss India America. Here’s just a quick summary of each film showing I attended.

I decided to watch Dear Thalia because it was one of the films that was made here on Oahu. Also, the subject about homelessness caught my attention since it is a huge issue going on in the island. After watching this film, it definitely made me look at homelessness in a different perspective. This film has made me realize that not all homeless people are as bad as most people see them to be. Life is just unpredictable, so be humble for what you have, and try to “be the change” this world needs. As for the student showcase, I decided to attend that because I wanted to see what kind of talent is out there. I think watching films produced by other students is very helpful because it gives me the chance to see what others are coming up with, what techniques they use, and essentially learn new things from my peers. I was very impressed with the all the short films presented. For a full review of the student showcase, visit: http://hpu.hiff.org/2015/12/future-filmmakers-from-hawaii/.
The last film I watched at this year’s HIFF was Miss India America. I thought the film was actually pretty good. It was a bit predictable at times, but the film still kept me laughing and interested in what was going to happen. I thought the cinematography was beautiful and that the cast was amazing. It was also cool to watch because I loved seeing the different aspects of another culture. For a full review of Miss India America, visit: http://hpu.hiff.org/2015/12/miss-india-america-review/.

One thing I was extremely grateful for at this years HIFF was having a press pass. It gave me the opportunity to see these films for free and to be able to experience what it’s like being a reporter. Along with the pass came a bag filled with some goodies. I wish I had time to see even more films and attend more press events, but I’m still satisfied with my experience at HIFF. Thank you again to all the people that made it possible for me to experience this. I can’t wait for many more years of HIFF to come! ♥
